Naidu directs comprehensive support for farmers in A.P. amid El Niño threat

Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu has directed officials to provide comprehensive support to farmers as the state faces severe El Niño-induced drought conditions. During a review meeting, he was briefed on the 69% rainfall deficit in July and projections of 35-40% below-normal rainfall for the June-November season, which could result in only 551 mm of rain compared to the normal 844 mm. Officials warned that districts like West Godavari, Prakasam, and Krishna could experience acute drought, with significant impacts on cotton and paddy crops. In response, Naidu ordered measures including the promotion of alternative crops, expansion of irrigation using Vamsadhara river waters and borewells, and mandatory crop insurance for all cultivated land. He also mandated the creation of an El Niño Control Room for monitoring and advisories, along with ensuring drinking water, fodder, and stable prices for essential goods.
