A multi-day search operation on Mount Snežnik concluded successfully after a 69-year-old man from Postojna managed to reach a cabin on his own following several days of being lost. The man was found on Tuesday evening and transported via helicopter to the University Clinical Centre in Ljubljana due to exhaustion and dehydration. The search began on Saturday after police received a report that the man had gone missing during a hike on Mount Snežnik earlier that morning. Immediate efforts were launched to locate him, with the operation continuing through Sunday, Monday, and Tuesday. A large number of personnel participated in the search, including police officers who used drones and helicopters to survey the area. Rescue workers from the Mountain Rescue Service, firefighters from PGD Ilirska Bistrica, Vrbovo, and Podgora, members of the Civil Protection (EHI CZ RS) equipped with two specialized drones for terrain inspection, guides from the Unit of Search Dogs of Slovenia, and cavers from the Association of Slovenian Cavers all took part in the effort. Additionally, mountain rescuers from Croatia assisted in the search. During the operation, a wide area of the snow-covered plateau and many of the caves and crevices in the region were examined. However, the man was not located during these initial searches. On Tuesday evening, however, the caretaker of a cabin on Mount Snežnik informed authorities that the 69-year-old had managed to reach the cabin on his own. He was found in a severely exhausted and dehydrated state, prompting emergency responders to airlift him to the hospital for treatment. The Koper Police Department expressed gratitude for the extensive collaboration and dedication shown by all participants in the search. They highlighted the exceptional commitment and solidarity demonstrated by everyone involved on the ground, emphasizing their relief at the successful resolution of the incident. The search spanned four consecutive days, beginning with an immediate response on Saturday and continuing through the weekend and into the following week. Each day saw increased coordination among multiple agencies, reflecting the complexity of locating someone in such a remote and challenging environment. Despite the vast area covered and the diverse resources employed, the individual remained elusive until he reached the cabin independently. Authorities confirmed that the man’s condition upon discovery was critical due to the physical strain and environmental exposure he endured.
