The Maribor market square today celebrated the finest eggplants at its fourth annual festival, drawing visitors eager to sample diverse varieties and learn about local cultivation practices. Among the highlights was the heaviest eggplant recorded during the event, weighing 1,648 grams, grown by Helena and Gregor Schwarz. The festival, held at the central Maribor market, showcased top producers in categories for thick-skinned and cherry eggplants, with winners including Kmetija Ida Horvat, Kmetija Erna Skok, and Vrtnarstvo Mrak Jernej. The festival featured a range of eggplant types, each offering unique flavors and textures. Visitors had the opportunity to engage directly with growers, gaining insight into traditional and modern farming techniques. The event emphasized the importance of variety selection, particularly for thick-skinned eggplants, which often belong to older, heritage strains capable of producing exceptionally large fruits under favorable conditions. A key focus of the festival was fostering connections among farmers, experts, consumers, and buyers. Vanessa Žderić from the Maribor Agricultural Forestry Institute highlighted that while competition played a role, the true value of the event lay in networking. Direct interaction between producers and consumers strengthens trust in locally grown food, encourages shorter supply chains, and allows farmers to showcase their knowledge, work, and product quality. Eggplants are not just a fresh vegetable but also a versatile ingredient used in making juices, soups, jams, pureed porridges, dried products, and numerous other items. Through processing, their usability can extend beyond the harvest season, adding economic and nutritional benefits to local communities. The organizers have already begun planning for the upcoming fifth edition of the festival, though details remain confidential.
