A new electric Mercedes-AMG sports utility vehicle has been spotted during testing in the Austrian Alps, specifically near the Grossglockner mountain pass. The vehicle, still heavily camouflaged, was observed stopping at one of the region’s electric charging stations. This sighting marks another step forward in the development of one of the most anticipated upcoming models from Mercedes-AMG, a high-performance SUV set to debut in 2027. The prototype, identified as a potential successor to the four-door AMG GT sedan, was captured on the road heading toward Grossglockner. It stopped briefly at an electric charging station before continuing its journey. While the vehicle remains shrouded in camouflage, early signs suggest it will feature a design language influenced by the latest electric AMG GT sedan. The car appears to be positioned between the EQE SUV and the EQS SUV in terms of size, with a silhouette that hints at a more aggressive and sporty profile than current offerings. Mercedes-AMG is intensively developing this new standalone electric SUV, which is expected to make its debut in 2027. Although technical specifications have not yet been officially released, the company has hinted at using the same powertrain architecture as the upcoming electric AMG GT sedan. Based on the 800-volt AMG.EA platform, the vehicle will likely incorporate battery technology inspired by Formula One, including direct cell cooling. This innovation aims to deliver significantly improved stability under heavy loads and extremely fast charging capabilities. The charging system promises a maximum output of over 600 kilowatts, allowing drivers to gain up to 460 kilometers of range in just ten minutes. Charging from 10% to 80% capacity takes approximately 11 minutes. Power delivery comes from three electric motors arranged with axial airflow, two on the rear axle and one at the front. The base configuration produces 600 kilowatts (816 horsepower), while a higher-output variant can reach 860 kilowatts (1,169 horsepower). The vehicle accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 2.1 seconds, with top speed reaching 300 km/h when equipped with a performance package. If the SUV adopts similar technology, it would position itself among the most powerful electric SUVs available. It could directly compete with upcoming models such as the electric Porsche Cayenne and the Lotus Elise R. The combination of high performance, advanced engineering, and a bold design suggests that the new AMG SUV is poised to redefine expectations in the luxury electric vehicle segment.
