A large fire broke out on the island of Brač, and strong winds caused it to spread rapidly.

Sodelujejo štirje kanaderji in 65 gasilcev z 20 gasilskimi vozili.

Two major wildfires broke out near the town of Reka and on the island of Brač in Croatia on August 12, 2026, prompting a large-scale firefighting effort involving over 150 firefighters and multiple aerial support units. The fires erupted in two distinct locations, near Škrljevo and in the area of Pučišće on Brač, and quickly spread due to strong winds, forcing emergency services into a race against time to contain them. The fire near Pučišće began around 2:30 AM local time and engulfed grassland, low vegetation, and forest in a difficult-to-reach area. By mid-morning, 65 firefighters with 20 vehicles had arrived on site from Brač and the Split intervention fire unit. Four Canadian-made Canadair CL-415 aircraft were deployed from the air, while additional support came from land, including 47 firefighters with ten vehicles. According to Slavko Tucaković, chief of the Croatian Fire Service, the fire spread rapidly because of the wind, but firefighters managed to keep it away from nearby homes. Air support has been operating since early morning, and ground assistance continues to arrive. Meanwhile, another fire broke out near Škrljevo just before midnight. This blaze consumed approximately 30 hectares of grassland and low vegetation. Around 100 firefighters with 30 vehicles have been working on this fire, supported by three public fire units and 12 volunteer fire associations. An Air Tractor aircraft is assisting in aerial firefighting efforts. The situation remains tense as both fires continue to challenge emergency responders. Firefighters issued warnings to residents, emphasizing the strict ban on smoking in nature due to the current weather conditions that make fires spread quickly. They urged anyone who spots a fire or smoke to immediately call the emergency number 193. In addition to these fires, a third incident occurred in Lipica, where a fire broke out in a dense pine forest. The cause of this fire is still under investigation, though there is speculation it might have resulted from lightning during a storm the previous day. As of late evening on August 12, the fire was under control, and firefighters estimated that extinguishing operations would conclude within a few hours. Approximately 70 firefighters were assisted by colleagues from Italy, representatives from the horse breeding association, and officials from the Forestry Institute. The simultaneous occurrence of multiple wildfires across different regions highlights the severity of the situation. Emergency services have mobilized extensively, deploying both ground and aerial resources to combat the blazes. Despite their efforts, the rapid spread of the fires underscores the challenges posed by the current environmental conditions. Firefighters remain on high alert, monitoring developments closely and preparing for further action as needed.
