Muslim women gather in Ankara to shape future leadership

Young Muslim women from 25 countries convened in Ankara for the ALLY for Future: Young Muslim Women Leadership Program, which aimed to highlight the importance of leadership, representation, and building solutions rooted in Muslim cultural and intellectual traditions. Dr. Esra Albayrak, founder of the event and chair of the NUN Education and Culture Foundation, emphasized the need for young Muslim women to take greater roles in shaping global narratives and addressing challenges. She criticized Western portrayals of Muslim women as either victims or scapegoats, arguing that their agency and leadership are often overlooked. Albayrak also addressed misconceptions around Muslim women’s choices, such as wearing the headscarf, emphasizing their autonomy. She encouraged participants to look to historical Islamic female figures like Khadija for inspiration. Family and Social Services Minister Mahinur Özdemir Göktaş supported the initiative, stating it would strengthen women's leadership in the Islamic world and foster strategic responses to global issues.
