The hippopotamus calf found by fishermen in Puerto Nare, Antioquia, died 15 days after birth

A newborn hippopotamus found stranded in vegetation near Puerto Nare, Antioquia, has died after being rescued by local fishermen. The infant, estimated to be just 15 days old, was discovered in critical condition with severe dehydration and malnutrition. It was transported to the Hacienda Nápoles wildlife park for treatment but succumbed to its injuries late Wednesday. The animal was located in the rural area of La Sierra, approximately 215 kilometers from Medellín, along the banks of the Magdalena River. Officials from the Regional Corporation for the Watersheds of the Negro and Nare Rivers (Cornare) confirmed the death. Camilo Muñoz Collazos, coordinator of the Center for Wildlife Rescue and Assessment (CAV) at Cornare, described the situation. The calf had chronic signs of dehydration and malnutrition, alongside acute gastrointestinal issues that worsened its clinical condition. Despite efforts by technical teams from both Cornare and the Hacienda Nápoles park, the young hippo did not respond adequately to treatment. A post-mortem examination revealed lung and liver lesions, which contributed to its demise. This incident marks the second such rescue in recent months. On August 4, another baby hippo was found without its mother, also suffering from malnutrition. Experts noted the age of the latest calf based on the appearance of its umbilical cord. Both cases highlight the growing challenge posed by these animals, which have become increasingly common in the region. The presence of hippopotamuses in the area is linked to historical factors. These animals were originally brought to Colombia by Pablo Escobar, who owned the Hacienda Nápoles estate. Over time, they have multiplied beyond controlled numbers, leading to concerns over their impact on local ecosystems and human safety. Local residents have adapted to coexist with these large mammals, often reporting sightings during nighttime hours when temperatures drop. The government under President Gustavo Petro authorized the euthanization of wild hippopotamuses, citing them as invasive exotic species. Authorities urge locals to report any encounters promptly. However, this decision has sparked debate. The incoming administration led by Abelardo De La Espriella has expressed opposition to the proposed culling, advocating instead for the establishment of a sanctuary in the Magdalena Medio region to manage the population sustainably. Residents in the affected areas have shared their experiences with living alongside these animals. Some describe a cautious coexistence, while others emphasize the risks associated with the increasing number of hippopotamuses roaming freely. Reports from earlier this year highlighted how communities navigate daily life amidst the presence of these powerful creatures.
