A study has found that exposure to motorboat noise during the early development of coral reef fish leads to reduced growth and impaired ability to escape predators. Researchers from the University of Exeter, University of Bristol, and James Cook University conducted experiments on spiny chromis fish from the Great Barrier Reef, exposing them to either motorboat noise or natural reef sounds during the embryonic and post-hatching stages. Fish exposed to motorboat noise grew 7% shorter on average and showed a significantly lower response rate to simulated predator attacks compared to those exposed to natural sounds. Those that did react were more likely to swim toward the predator. The researchers suggest that motorboat noise may interfere with parental behaviors such as oxygenating eggs, leading to long-term developmental impacts. They recommend limiting motorboat traffic near reefs during breeding seasons to mitigate these effects and protect coral reef ecosystems.
