Cleaner air is predominantly found in remote, rural regions of Scotland and Wales. In England, areas of Devon in the south and Cumberland and Northumberland in the north enjoy lower pollution levels. Jonathan Blades, head of policy and public affairs at Asthma + Lung UK, expressed concern over the widespread exposure to unsafe air pollution, linking it to up to 43,000 premature deaths annually in the UK. He emphasized that individuals with lung conditions face heightened vulnerability, calling for updated guidelines and stronger protections. The charity advocates for the Labour Party to reaffirm its backing of a new Clean Air Act, which would establish legally enforceable air quality standards aligned with WHO recommendations. It also proposes a nationwide initiative to educate the public on the effects of air pollution and strategies to minimize exposure. A Defra spokesperson acknowledged the detrimental impact of poor air quality, noting its financial burden on the NHS due to increased treatment demands for lung and asthma-related conditions.
