Artist Luísa Cunha has died, one of the pioneers in Portugal of the use of sound and voice in contemporary art
The Portuguese artist Luísa Cunha, known for her pioneering work in using sound and voice in contemporary art, has passed away at the age of 77 after battling cancer. She was hospitalized in Lisbon and died on July 6th. Born in 1949, she had recently been active in the art world, with her latest exhibition scheduled for September 2025. Her gallery representative, Miguel Nabinho, praised her unique contributions to Portuguese contemporary art, particularly in the field of sound-based works, which he said opened new creative possibilities for younger artists. Cunha also held a degree in German Philology and taught German and English while pursuing her artistic career.
