A 38-year-old Indian worker died after falling from a loader in a farm near Laterza, in the province of Taranto, southern Italy. The incident, which occurred between May 25 and 26, 2024, has led to the arrest of two individuals and the investigation of another two for charges including manslaughter, exploitation of migrant workers, environmental violations, illegal waste management, and unauthorized employment of foreign nationals. The victim, named Rajwinder Sidhu Singh, was working under conditions described as exploitative and unsafe. According to investigators, Singh was employed for up to 13 hours daily with wages below three euros per hour. He lived in substandard housing located adjacent to barns, filled with mold. His death resulted from a severe thoraco-abdominal trauma caused by a fall from a loader that collided with a New Jersey-type barrier. Medical reports, forensic analyses, video footage, and witness statements were used to reconstruct the accident. Singh, who was undocumented and lacked certification to operate the machinery, was found seated on the loader’s seat without safety belts. He had consumed excessive alcohol and was transporting plastic waste intended for combustion. The loader itself was outdated, exposing the operator to risks such as entanglement, burns, and electrical shocks. The case emerged following the arrival of Singh's body at the hospital in Castellaneta, where initial reports suggested he had suffered a sudden illness. Subsequent investigations revealed a broader pattern of labor abuse. Workers, primarily from Punjab, faced long hours without proper breaks or holidays. A portion of their pay was reportedly withheld by employers. Many resided in unsanitary living conditions within the agricultural premises, making it difficult for them to report abuses due to dependency on their employers. Environmental violations have also been implicated. Prosecutors allege that the farm failed to maintain adequate facilities for storing animal waste. Instead, an alternative system was allegedly constructed using channels, pools, pipes, embankments, and earthworks to divert waste outside authorized areas. These activities were monitored via drones and technical assessments. One channel was found to pass through piles of manure and terminate in a man-made lake within the Region’s Terra delle Gravine Park, an area protected by landscape, environmental, and hydrogeological constraints. During a site visit by the Superintendency, further evidence was collected. The arrests include Giovanni Giannico, an agricultural entrepreneur from Laterza, and his son Carlo. Both have been placed under house arrest. The public prosecutors, Francesco Ciardo and Filomena Di Tursi, requested the precautionary detention order, which was granted by Judge Mariano Robertiello. The investigation continues into whether the deaths of other workers have been similarly linked to systemic neglect and illegal practices. Authorities are examining the extent of environmental damage and potential criminal liability for the accused.
