Cloths or wipes should be slightly damp rather than soaking wet to prevent moisture from entering charging ports or speakers. For hard-to-reach areas, a soft, dry brush can be used instead. Strong cleaning agents like vinegar, bleach, and hydrogen peroxide should be avoided, as they can harm the oleophobic layer on smartphones, which resists fingerprints and smudges. Excessive scrubbing and harsh chemicals can degrade this layer, reducing the phone’s touch responsiveness over time. Jha recommends cleaning phones weekly, though the frequency may vary depending on usage and environmental factors.
