Minister gives special attention to Penyengat Island development

Public Works Minister Dody Hanggodo emphasized the importance of developing Penyengat Island during a recent visit to the historic site in Tanjungpinang, Riau Islands. The island, situated approximately 15 minutes from the city center via a traditional wooden boat called pompong, is recognized as a key tourist destination offering cultural, historical, and religious experiences. During the visit, Hanggodo was joined by local officials, including Tanjungpinang Mayor Lis Darmansyah and Deputy Mayor Raja Ariza, who guided him through the island’s attractions. The minister outlined plans to continue prioritizing Penyengat Island’s development over the next two years, focusing on projects such as redesigning the Balai Adat, repainting the Sultan Riau Mosque, and repairing the Pelantar Kuning jetty. These initiatives aim to enhance the island’s appeal to both domestic and international tourists while preserving its rich heritage. The Ministry of Public Works has already undertaken efforts to improve infrastructure, including expanding roads, constructing pedestrian paths, upgrading drainage systems to combat flooding, and installing utilities, shelters, and public spaces. Hanggodo noted that the Ministry has been working to address slum conditions on the island, which have been gradually improved through these interventions. He also mentioned coordination with the Ministry of Transportation for the jetty repair project, emphasizing that the task distribution between agencies is clear. However, he did not disclose the exact budget required for future developments, stating that calculations are ongoing. The visit included a tour of Penyengat Island by motorized pedicab, allowing the minister to inspect key historical and cultural landmarks such as the Balai Adat and the Sultan Riau Mosque.
