Mining and sustainability in the Alps: biodegradable geotextiles to preserve snow

Mini has launched an innovative project called 'Mini Takes Care' aimed at preserving snow in high-altitude areas using biodegradable geotextiles. The initiative, developed in collaboration with Alpin Arena Senales, seeks to address environmental concerns by reducing reliance on fossil-based materials and minimizing microplastic pollution. These geotextiles, produced by Lenzing AG and certified by TÜV AUSTRIA, are designed to degrade naturally in soil, freshwater, and marine environments while maintaining durability against harsh alpine conditions such as wind, sun, and temperature fluctuations. The project aligns with Mini’s broader commitment to sustainable design, including the use of recycled polyester in car interiors since 2024. After their use in the mountains, the geotextiles will be collected, recycled, and repurposed into new textile products through partnerships with companies like Marchi & Fildi, SAFE, and Napapijri, promoting a circular economy.
