A study by Colombia's Geological Service (SGC) indicates that rocks in the copper and molybdenum deposit in Mocoa, Putumayo, could release potentially toxic elements and generate acidic drainage. The deposit has attracted interest from the Canadian company Libero Cobre, which currently holds two mining titles there and is conducting exploration with the aim of eventually exploiting these minerals. Acid drainage occurs when sulfide minerals come into contact with oxygen and water, creating acidic solutions where potentially toxic chemical elements become more mobile. More than 90% of the rock samples analyzed have the potential to generate acid drainage if exposed to the environment, while around 10% do not generate acidity but are insufficient to neutralize it. Between 2022 and 2026, the SGC conducted studies to identify the presence of acidifying minerals and those capable of neutralizing acidity and potentially toxic elements in the deposit. They used 89 rock samples from ten drilling cores.
