Microsoft to lay off 4,800 employees; Xbox gaming division most at risk

Microsoft has announced plans to cut approximately 4,800 jobs globally, representing 2.1% of its global workforce, with the gaming division Xbox being the most affected. The company stated that these changes are due to evolving technology and business needs, particularly in artificial intelligence. Executive Amy Coleman mentioned that the way technology is built, deployed, and used is changing faster than ever before. This comes at a time when Microsoft is trying to establish itself as a major player in AI while competing with companies like Anthropic and OpenAI. The cuts follow previous rounds of layoffs in the tech industry as companies aim to reduce labor costs and increase investment in AI. Microsoft offered voluntary retirement packages earlier this year, with over 30% of eligible employees accepting them. In addition, the Xbox division plans to eliminate around 1,600 jobs immediately, with another 3,200 expected by fiscal year 2027. This follows a failed acquisition strategy in 2018 aimed at expanding Xbox's game development capabilities.

Three percent of Microsoft employees will lose their jobs

Microsoft je objavil veliko prestrukturiranje, vključno z ukinitvijo 6.400 delovnih mest, kar predstavlja približno tri odstotke vseh zaposlenih. Največji utrk bo doletel igralni oddelek Xbox, kjer bo izgubilo 3.200 strokovnjakov. Kljub rekordnemu prevzemu Activision Blizzard-a so finančni učinki še vedno neprimerni.
