Miami Beach officials have completed a bold ecological initiative by submerging 22 concrete vehicles into the ocean, transforming them into artificial habitats for marine life. This effort, part of the REEFLINE project, marks a significant step in integrating art, science, and environmental protection. The submerged cars, positioned approximately 20 feet below the surface, are designed to serve as a home for over 2,200 corals and other aquatic organisms. The project began in early 2025, with the goal of restoring a once-thriving reef area along Miami Beach's coastline. The site, located between 4th and 5th streets off the main thoroughfare, had been largely obscured by sediment due to historical dredging activities. The REEFLINE initiative seeks to revive this ecosystem by utilizing repurposed vehicles as structural supports for coral growth. Each car was modified with specialized fittings allowing for the attachment of corals cultivated at the Miami Native Coral Lab in Allapattah. These corals display a range of colors and forms, including vibrant purples, greens, and yellows, with some exhibiting intricate, feather-like structures. The concept behind the project was developed by artist Leandro Erlich, whose design evokes a sense of underwater Atlantis, a metaphorical nod to the city's vulnerability to rising sea levels and climate change. Ximena Caminos, founder and artistic director of REEFLINE, emphasized the symbolic importance of the installation. She described the cars as a representation of the region's car-centric lifestyle and its environmental impact, while also highlighting how these structures can be transformed into platforms for ecological recovery. “This is transforming that, or using it, if you want, as a vehicle for transformation and regeneration,” Caminos explained. Scientific collaboration plays a crucial role in the success of the project. Researchers from the Rescue a Reef program plan to utilize the installation as a living laboratory, testing different coral species under real-world oceanic conditions. The site's strategic location allows for monitoring of how these corals adapt to varying water temperatures and salinity levels, contributing valuable data to broader marine conservation efforts. The installation also serves a practical function in enhancing coastal resilience. As a barrier island, Miami Beach relies heavily on healthy coral reefs to mitigate the effects of storm surges and erosion. The vehicles, constructed to endure harsh marine environments, are engineered to withstand extreme weather conditions. They were tested in the University of Miami’s wind-wave-storm tank to ensure durability and stability. Deploying the cars required meticulous planning and execution. Divers initially mapped the ocean floor to establish precise coordinates for the underwater layout. The vehicles were transported via a 160-foot barge named Charli’s Angel, which featured a large crane capable of handling the weight of each structure. Despite initial challenges posed by turbulent waters, the team successfully placed several cars over the course of multiple days. Construction manager John Kearns noted the difficulty of maintaining stability during deployment, emphasizing the need for careful coordination to prevent displacement caused by shifting currents. As the project progresses, ongoing assessments will determine the effectiveness of the artificial reef in supporting biodiversity and reinforcing coastal defenses.
