The National Hurricane Center (NHC) estimates a 20 percent chance that the system will acquire tropical characteristics before reaching French territory. This would mark an unusual occurrence in European weather patterns, as such developments are relatively rare. The system, which originated from a parent depression over the central Atlantic, is moving toward the northwest of Spain and the western coast of Portugal. It is currently located above waters in the Atlantic Ocean that are two to three degrees warmer than seasonal averages. These conditions provide the necessary thermal energy for the system to deepen, according to Gilles Matricon, a meteorologist with La Chaîne Météo. He explained that the warm ocean temperatures support the formation of stronger convection, which could lead to more intense precipitation and thunderstorms. If the system does develop tropical features, it is expected to bring heavy rainfall and severe storms as it progresses through the Bay of Biscay and into the Gulf of Gascony. By Monday, it is projected to reach French shores, bringing with it a rise in temperatures and potential for widespread thunderstorms. However, the timing of this development remains uncertain, as the system must remain over open ocean waters to continue its transformation. Matricon noted that while the current trajectory suggests a possible tropical transition, there is still a step to take before the system qualifies as a tropical storm. For that to occur, sustained wind speeds would need to exceed 63 kilometers per hour. At present, the winds are below that threshold, meaning the system remains classified as a depression rather than a storm. This kind of weather phenomenon is uncommon in Europe, though not unheard of. In 2005, Hurricane Vince became the first tropical system to make landfall on the continent, striking near Huelva, Spain, as a tropical depression. Similarly, depressions named Ophelia and Leslie impacted France in 2005 and 2017 respectively, although they occurred in October. Matricon remarked that it would be extraordinary if a tropical depression were to affect France before mid-September, highlighting how unusual such an event would be. As the system continues its movement, further updates are expected from both the NHC and local meteorological services. Weather models will closely monitor the evolving situation, providing updated forecasts in the coming hours. Residents along the Atlantic coast should remain alert for changes in weather conditions, particularly in the days ahead.
