A tragic car accident near the village of Unec in Slovenia has claimed the lives of three members of a Macedonian family, according to reports from local media. The incident occurred on Thursday around 16:30, when a vehicle with Italian license plates, driven by a 39-year-old man, was traveling from Ljubljana toward Sežan. The car was carrying his 74-year-old mother, 33-year-old wife, and their two children, a four-year-old girl and an 11-year-old boy. The family was returning from North Macedonia to Ravenna, where they reside. The crash took place on a slight incline just outside the village of Unec. According to preliminary accounts, the driver, whose identity has not yet been confirmed, initially swerved right into the slow lane before crashing into the guardrail. He then instinctively turned left, causing the vehicle to drift sideways for several meters before coming to rest in a parking space where another truck had previously stopped due to mechanical failure. The truck, which belonged to a 64-year-old Bosnian driver, had come to a stop in the emergency lane. Emergency services were called to the scene, and the rescue operation proved extremely challenging. Gas fire fighters from the Cerkinsko Fire Department described the situation as highly stressful, noting that the bodies of the deceased, two children and the elderly woman, were found in a state of severe trauma. The rescuers were visibly shaken by the sight of the victims, prompting the provision of psychological support for both the responders and the surviving family members. The collision resulted in the vehicle striking the left side of the stationary truck’s trailer with considerable force. The impact was fatal for the 74-year-old mother, who died instantly. Her son and daughter-in-law were thrown from the car during the crash, suffering severe injuries. Both children were pronounced dead at the scene, while the driver remained unharmed. His wife, seated behind him, suffered facial injuries but was otherwise lightly injured. The first to arrive at the scene were Austrian rescue teams, who had inadvertently arrived several hundred meters away from the crash site. They attempted to assist the injured, though they could offer no help to the children or their grandmother. An Austrian doctor, fluent in Slovenian, was among the initial responders. Soon after, rescue teams from Cerknica and Logatec, along with local firefighters, joined the effort to extract the survivors from the wreckage. Medical assistance was urgently required for the 33-year-old woman, who was transported via ambulance to the Ljubljana Clinical Center. There, she was diagnosed with minor injuries, while her husband, the driver, was found to have sustained no injuries. A doctor from the Cerkinsko Health Center confirmed the tragic loss of life, stating that the 74-year-old woman and her grandson had succumbed to their injuries. Investigations revealed that neither child had been wearing seat belts, a factor that may have contributed to the severity of their injuries. Inspector Peter Leban of the Copriska Police Authority noted that the Bosnian truck driver had legally pulled over due to a malfunction, and he had felt the impact but was uninjured. The police also concluded that the family's inability to avoid the crash was due to the chaotic traffic conditions, with drivers failing to move aside from the road edge despite the danger. Footage released by the fire department and the Rescue Pass organization shows how difficult it was for drivers to maneuver safely on the narrow road. Multiple vehicles were seen unable to shift to the shoulder, creating a dangerous situation for all road users. Some drivers on the overtaking lane failed to move left, exacerbating the risk. The footage highlights the broader issue of unsafe driving behavior and its potential consequences.
