Mercedes-Benz CLA 200 first drive: Can this R1m AI-powered sedan defy the SUV trend?

Mercedes-Benz has unveiled the CLA 200, a new sedan priced at approximately R1 million, aiming to challenge the dominance of SUVs in the South African automotive market. This model marks the debut of a new vehicle family built on Mercedes-Benz's modular architecture, offering enhanced size and space compared to its predecessor. The CLA 200 features a 48V mild-hybrid powertrain and the latest in-car technology from the German automaker. Two local specification options are available: Progressive and AMG Line. The exterior design of the CLA 200 maintains its coupé-like silhouette while incorporating updated styling and lighting technology. With a wheelbase of 2,790 mm, short overhangs, and a low roofline, the car presents a sleek profile. The body features prominent shoulder lines extending from the front wheel arches toward the rear. During a test drive, the system was queried about Cape Town drivers and scenic routes to a lunch destination, demonstrating its interactive capabilities. The system also supports over-the-air software updates, ensuring continuous improvements and functionality enhancements. The Superscreen is framed by chrome-surrounded air vents, which some might find overly ornate. However, considering the CLA's global appeal, particularly in markets like China, these design choices make strategic sense. A multi-level center console houses cup holders and a wireless smartphone charging pad, while redesigned doors include sculpted grab handles and larger center panels. Improved headroom compared to the previous model allows for comfortable seating, even with a sloping roofline. Under the hood, the CLA 200 is equipped with a 1.5-liter four-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine paired with a 48V mild-hybrid system. An electric motor integrated into the new eight-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission sends power to the front wheels. This setup generates 120 kW and 250 Nm of torque, with Mercedes-Benz claiming a 0-100 km/h acceleration time of 8.0 seconds. Unlike many 48V mild-hybrid systems, the CLA can operate solely on electric power for brief periods in slow-moving traffic. During the test drive, the CLA 200 demonstrated a refined driving experience across various road conditions. Its premium interior construction complements the smooth ride quality. When accelerating, the engine noise is channeled through the speakers, though its necessity on a traditional internal combustion engine in a Mercedes-Benz is debatable. While not designed for high-performance driving, the CLA excels in long-distance travel and cruising on smooth roads. The low ground clearance requires careful navigation over speed bumps to prevent damage to the front bumper. The steering response is direct, allowing the CLA to handle tight corners effectively.
