More kindergartens, little new in terms of opening hours

A study by the Austrian Institute for Family Research reveals significant expansion in childcare facilities and services between 2016/17 and 2022/23, with a five percent increase in facilities and an eight percent rise in children served. However, there has been little change in operating hours or group sizes. While costs have risen sharply, public spending reached €2.6 billion in 2023, up 60% from 2017, the quality and availability of care remain limited. Family Minister Claudia Bauer acknowledged progress but emphasized the need for greater family autonomy in child-rearing decisions. The Greens criticized her for failing to address persistent gender roles in childcare, stating that 'the mother will manage it' remains the societal norm.
