Lt. Gen. Dhiraj Seth appointed next Army Chief

Lieutenant General Dhiraj Seth has been officially appointed as the next Chief of the Army Staff (COAS) of the Indian Army, marking a historic transition in the leadership of the nation’s largest paramilitary force. This decision was formally announced by the Indian government on June 13, 2026, with the official change of command scheduled to occur on June 30, 2026, coinciding with the retirement of the current Chief of Army Staff, General Upendra Dwivedi. Throughout his career, General Seth has commanded multiple units and formations, including an armoured regiment in the desert sector, an armoured brigade in the Western Theatre, and a counter-insurgency force in Jammu and Kashmir. These experiences have equipped him with a deep understanding of both conventional warfare and asymmetric threats. As a Lieutenant General, he has commanded the Sudarshan Chakra Corps, which is considered one of the Indian Army’s premier strike formations. Additionally, he has served as the General Officer Commanding (GOC) of the Delhi Area, a role that involves overseeing key national and international military engagements and ceremonial duties.

He received the Param Vishisht Seva Medal in 2025, the highest peacetime award in the Indian armed forces, and the Uttam Yudh Seva Medal in 2026 for distinguished service during wartime or conflict. Earlier, he was honored with the Ati Vishisht Seva Medal in 2022. These accolades reflect his consistent excellence and dedication to the armed forces throughout his career.
