A bear with cubs near Valley Village: Hunters caution

A mother brown bear with cubs has been spotted near the village of Dolenja, close to the town of Ribnica, prompting local hunters and officials to warn residents to exercise caution. The animal has been observed primarily on fields and meadows outside the settlement, according to David Berkopec, head of the local hunting family. He explained that if the bear gets too close to inhabited areas, it could become accustomed to human presence, leading to future conflicts. Fortunately, no incidents have occurred yet. Residents have reported seeing the bear with three cubs roaming around their properties. One homeowner described how he checks his surroundings whenever he is outdoors, noting the bear's frequent appearances. Another resident mentioned concerns over her child’s safety while pushing a stroller through the area. Local mayor Samo Pogorelec emphasized the seriousness of the situation, warning that even the sight of footprints can indicate the bear's proximity. He urged citizens to remain cautious when walking on field paths or forest trails, acknowledging the discomfort caused by the knowledge that a wild animal is nearby. According to hunters, several factors contribute to the increased sightings of bears with cubs near settlements this year. One reason cited is the extreme drought conditions, which have forced animals to seek water sources more frequently. Berkopec noted that the bear was likely searching for a consistent water supply, pointing to the area near the Blata wetlands as a possible location. Another factor is the growing population of brown bears in Slovenia, estimated between 1,000 and 1,400 individuals by the Hunting Association of Slovenia. The increase in bear numbers has been influenced by a court decision last year that prevented the culling of 206 bears. This has led to older male bears occupying prime habitats, often attacking younger bears, forcing females to retreat further into human-populated areas. Marko Jonozovič from the Hunting Association of Slovenia welcomed the recent court approval allowing selective culling of problematic bears. However, he clarified that the organization would not engage in widespread culling operations across the country. Berkopec stated that the hunting group plans to intervene selectively, targeting specific bears that lose their fear of humans and pose a threat to communities. Meanwhile, Mayor Pogorelec stressed the importance of considering human safety when making decisions regarding culling. He warned that those who oppose the culling should be prepared to accept responsibility for potential risks. Authorities anticipate beginning culling operations in the fall, aiming to address the immediate threats posed by the bear population. Residents continue to monitor the situation closely, balancing the need for wildlife conservation with the imperative to protect human lives and property.
