Director of the Holy See Press Office, Matteo Bruni, has stated that reports circulating in recent days regarding the alleged decision of judges in the case of Father Mark Ivan Rupnik are “completely unfounded.” In a statement released today to the media, Bruni clarified that the trial is still ongoing and that the judicial council is examining documentation received from the involved bishops, the Society of Jesus, affected individuals, and the media. “Reports concerning any decision made by judges handling the case of Father Mark Ivan Rupnik are completely unfounded,” according to the Vatican News website. Bruni emphasized that “during the course of proceedings, as with any judicial process, no information regarding the progress of work can be disclosed, both out of respect for the process itself and to prevent additional suffering to those involved, as has occurred in recent days.” He added, “If the judicial council determines that additional information is needed, it will take all necessary steps on its own initiative to obtain it.” The statement also explained that the canonical criminal proceeding is of a judicial nature and continues regardless of outdated statutes that might otherwise apply to alleged criminal acts.
