Martigues: French gas power station has to be disconnected due to heat in the Mediterranean

A French gas power plant in Martigues has been forced to shut down due to high temperatures in the Mediterranean Sea, marking the first such occurrence since 2022. The energy company EDF disconnected the facility, which has a capacity of 930 megawatts, because access to cooling water was restricted. This decision comes amid worsening drought conditions and rising temperatures across the country. The shutdown adds to the strain on France’s already fragile energy supply. High river temperatures have already caused a loss of 4.9 gigawatts of nuclear power capacity, with another 2.5 gigawatts unavailable due to low water levels. While gas plants account for only a small portion of France's overall energy mix, the impact of this outage highlights growing vulnerabilities in the nation’s power grid. France relies heavily on nuclear energy, which provides approximately 70 percent of its electricity. The current capacity losses amount to around 14 percent of the country’s total nuclear generating capacity. This situation is exacerbated by the effects of climate change, which have led to unprecedented disruptions in power generation. Thibault Laconde, founder of the climate data analysis firm Callendar, described the recent wave of failures as “exampleless in scale and timing.” He noted that these outages have affected reactors that typically remain operational during heatwaves. According to Météo France, the heatwave is expected to ease over the coming days, but the lack of rainfall will continue to worsen the drought. The ongoing drought has further complicated efforts to maintain stable power production. With rivers running lower than usual and water temperatures reaching dangerous levels, both nuclear and gas facilities face increasing challenges. Nuclear plants require large volumes of water for cooling, and when supplies are insufficient, they must reduce output or temporarily halt operations. EDF’s decision to shut down the Martigues gas plant underscores the broader crisis facing France’s energy sector. As temperatures rise and water resources dwindle, the country is struggling to meet demand while maintaining reliable service. The government has called for increased investment in renewable energy and improved infrastructure to mitigate future risks. With more reactors potentially reducing their output in the coming days, the outlook for France’s energy stability remains uncertain.
