Mario Roggero, the Prosecutor's Office seizes 50 thousand euros from the jeweler: an account was discovered in Tunisia with the funds of supporters

The Procura Generale di Torino has ordered the seizure of 50,000 euros held in a bank account in Tunisia belonging to jewelry dealer Mario Roggero. The funds were transferred abroad before the appeal trial, which concluded with Roggero receiving a definitive sentence of 14 years and nine months for the killing of two robbers and the wounding of a third. The action was taken to secure the money needed for legal expenses and to clarify the issue of damages compensation following the Supreme Court’s verdict. In a statement signed by prosecutor Lucia Musti, the authorities confirmed the measure aims to "clarify the issue indicated generally in terms of damage compensation." Roggero, who has been convicted of murder and assault, had previously faced restrictions on leaving Italy after the court noted suspicious financial movements. These anomalies were flagged by the Guardia di Finanza long before the appeal process began. An unusual transfer was traced, revealing that funds originally intended for legal costs and compensation payments had been redirected to a North African account. This prompted the appellate court to impose a travel ban on Roggero. The Procura later confirmed that the funds were moved through a committee supporting Roggero's defense, known as #iostoconmarioroggero, and deposited into a Tunisian account jointly owned by Roggero and his wife, Mariangela Sandrone. The move came just ahead of the appeal hearing. The Procura also addressed the issue of compensation to the families of the victims. According to the documents, the Assize Court of Asti had ruled that Roggero should pay a total of 480,000 euros to 14 relatives of the two deceased robbers and the surviving accomplice. The ruling was upheld during the appeal. The total amount of provisional payments distributed to individual claimants varied between 10,000 and 60,000 euros each, resulting in a combined sum of 780,000 euros. Of this, Roggero had already paid 300,000 euros during preliminary hearings, leaving 480,000 euros still outstanding. Among those compensated is Alessandro Modica, the third robber who survived the shooting and was represented by attorney Carla Montarolo. Modica, who had previously settled his case by pleading guilty to four years and ten months in prison, will receive a provisional payment of 10,000 euros. The remaining 480,000 euros, however, remain unpaid, pending further judicial proceedings. The Procura emphasized that the 50,000 euro seizure was part of efforts to ensure that these obligations could be fulfilled. The measures taken by the Procura reflect ongoing concerns regarding the management of funds associated with Roggero’s legal defense. The decision to freeze the overseas account underscores the judiciary’s intent to prevent potential misuse of resources and ensure transparency in financial dealings related to the case. Legal experts have pointed out that such actions are standard practice in complex criminal cases involving large sums and international transfers. As the legal proceedings continue, the focus remains on ensuring that all financial obligations stemming from the conviction are properly addressed. The family members of the victims and the surviving accomplice await resolution of their claims, while the court monitors the enforcement of the judgment.
