An international research team led by the University of Tartu discovered that around 470 million years ago, marine animals first began using empty mollusk shells as habitats, marking a significant ecological shift. Fossil analysis showed that during the Cambrian period, such shells remained largely unoccupied, but by the Middle Ordovician, small organisms like bryozoans and graptolites started inhabiting them. The study highlights how shell morphology affected the diversity and size of the organisms that could thrive inside, with nautiloid shells providing better water circulation and thus supporting more varied communities. The emergence of this behavior coincided with a surge in Ordovician biodiversity, suggesting a link between environmental changes and evolutionary adaptations.
