Gazeta ExpressIndependentCenter14 days ago KFOR reduction, rezresult of careful assessment of conditions on the ground and not a signal of withdrawalThe reduction of KFOR troops in Kosovo has been presented by official sources as an indication of improved security conditions on the ground. However, this development raises questions about the future of security, the role of local institutions, and political balances both within and outside Kosovo. NATO announced plans for a gradual adjustment of its presence in Kosovo next year, reflecting an assessment of more stable security conditions. The Supreme Allied Commander in Europe, Alexus G. Grynkewich, linked this change to the increased capacity of local security institutions, which have created space for reducing the KFOR mission. NATO emphasized that any changes would be carefully monitored and reversible if needed. The Secretary General of NATO, Mark Rutte, described this as positive news, noting overall improvements in security in Kosovo over the past year. Kosovo's Minister of Defense, Ejup Maqedonci, highlighted the consolidation of institutional control across the country as a key factor influencing NATO's assessment. The report states that these professionals create and manage shell companies, maintain falsified financial records, and legitimize property and loan contracts used to integrate illicit funds into the formal economy. It notes that despite guidelines issued in 2023 aimed at improving compliance among legal professionals, the number of suspicious transaction reports filed by lawyers and notaries remains low.
