A new digital mapping project called Glo-CoH has been launched to help protect UNESCO World Heritage sites located in low-lying coastal areas from climate threats like rising sea levels, flooding, and erosion. Led by researchers from the University of East Anglia, Durham University, and the University of Cape Town, the project creates a comprehensive dataset of over 1,250 heritage sites globally. These sites include iconic landmarks such as the Sydney Opera House, parts of the Great Wall of China, and the Moai statues of Rapa Nuri. The dataset provides precise digital boundaries for these sites, enabling better modeling of environmental risks and supporting decision-making for their preservation. The work is published in the journal Scientific Data and will be updated to reflect the latest UNESCO listings by the end of 2026.
