A 49-year-old man is set to appear in court after a violent rampage in Auckland’s Epsom district left multiple people injured and a dog dead. The incident, which unfolded during the early hours of Wednesday morning, involved a series of attacks and collisions that shocked local residents and emergency responders. According to police, the man, who is known to authorities, began his spree by assaulting a woman while she was jogging on Manukau Road. He attacked her without warning, causing bruising to her face, head, and upper body. A bystander intervened, helping the victim, but the man then stole the good Samaritan’s vehicle. Police described the sequence of events as “six separate incidents that unfolded in relatively quick succession,” with just eight minutes passing between the initial call and the man’s arrest. Following the theft, the man drove the stolen car through the area, colliding with several vehicles before striking three teenage cyclists on Manukau Road. The impact caused significant damage, with one of the cyclists remaining in critical condition at Auckland Hospital. The other two were treated for less severe injuries. Witnesses described the scene as chaotic, with broken bicycles scattered across the road and vehicles damaged beyond recognition. In a subsequent act of violence, the man approached a woman walking her dogs and subjected one of the animals to a brutal attack. The dog, which was strangled, died at the scene. Police were able to subdue the man using a taser after attempting it once. The woman, who was deeply upset, received assistance from officers. Superintendent Sunny Patel, the Auckland City District Commander, stated that there was no ongoing threat to the community. One of the injured cyclists, a student from Auckland Grammar School, was in critical condition and underwent surgery. The other two students were in serious and moderate condition, respectively.
