Man nabbed in Quezon City over alleged P3.4-M fraud

A 31-year-old man was arrested in Quezon City for allegedly defrauding an OFW recruitment agency of PHP 3.435 million. According to the National Capital Region Police Office (NCRPO), the suspect pretended to represent an organization that accredits agencies deploying overseas Filipino workers to Taiwan. He convinced a 48-year-old female victim to withdraw money from her bank account, claiming she needed to open a U.S. dollar account as part of the accreditation process. After receiving the funds, the suspect took the victim's luxury handbag, supposedly to retrieve U.S. dollars from his car, but fled the area. The handbag had a tracking device, which helped authorities locate him in Barangay Payatas. Police recovered PHP 2.8 million in cash and the handbag, though the whereabouts of the remaining PHP 600,000 remain unknown. The suspect is currently in police custody while criminal charges are prepared.
