Man in court after two garda cars damaged in chase

A 32-year-old man has appeared in court following a police pursuit that damaged two garda vehicles. Adam Strong of Kilcavan, Geashill, Co Laois was granted conditional bail during a special sitting of Tullamore District Court. The incident occurred in Offaly and Laois, where Strong is accused of dangerous driving and possession of cocaine. Strong was arrested in connection with the pursuit, which led to damage to two garda cars. The charges include dangerous driving at Killeigh and Ballydownan in Offaly, and at Clonaslee and Derryguile in Laois. He is also charged with possession of cocaine at Derryguile on the same day. Gardaí opposed his release on bail, citing the severity of the alleged offenses. His solicitor, Gerry Maher, stated that Strong lives with his parents, is employed full-time, and has cooperated with the gardaí since his arrest. Judge Michael Connellan approved bail under specific terms. Strong must post a bond of €2,000 and secure an independent surety of €6,500, which must be approved by a district court judge within 24 hours. Conditions of bail include maintaining sobriety, adhering to good behavior, providing contact information, observing a curfew, and signing in weekly at Portlaoise Garda Station on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays. The court ordered him to remain in custody pending a hearing at Portlaoise District Court on 27 August. The pursuit reportedly began in the afternoon, leading to a high-speed chase through rural areas. Witnesses described the incident as chaotic, with the suspect evading officers for several kilometers before being apprehended. The damage to the two garda cars was significant, requiring extensive repairs. Local authorities have expressed concern over the incident, emphasizing the risks posed by such pursuits.
