A man and a woman have been convicted of human trafficking and multiple related crimes following a case in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. The woman, an adult, was lured to the province by the accused, who covered her travel costs, according to the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA). The offences took place between September 2 and 6, 2022, during which time the woman was subjected to repeated sexual violence and forced into prostitution. Upon arrival at a residence in the Malvern area, the woman was allegedly raped twice by one of the accused and restricted from leaving. She was told she was "owned" by the perpetrator, effectively stripping her of autonomy. Over time, she was compelled to engage in prostitution, with clients visiting the home. The accused repeatedly assaulted her when she attempted to escape, with one of them being convicted of two counts of rape and assault with intent to cause grievous harm, while the other received a conviction for one count of rape. The woman’s plight came to an end when she managed to reach out to her sister, who promptly informed the authorities of her location. Police intervened, rescuing the victim and apprehending the defendants. The case was scheduled for sentencing on September 25, 2026, in the same court. The NPA spokesperson, Natasha Ramkisson-Kara, confirmed the developments, emphasizing the severity of the crimes committed against the woman. The trial revealed the systematic nature of the abuse, with the accused using financial incentives and coercion to control their victim.
