Malaysia extends long-missing flight MH370 search deal to 2027

Malaysia has announced the extension of its search for the missing Malaysia Airlines Flight MH370 by an additional year, pushing the operation forward until June 30, 2027. The Boeing 777, which disappeared on March 8, 2014, while en route from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing, remains one of the most perplexing aviation mysteries in modern history. At the time of its disappearance, the aircraft was carrying 239 individuals, including a majority of Chinese citizens, alongside Malaysians, Indonesians, Australians, and other nationalities from around the globe. Despite extensive efforts involving some of the largest maritime search operations ever attempted, the plane has yet to be located.

The search effort has spanned over a decade, with multiple phases undertaken by international teams. Initially, Malaysia led the search in collaboration with Australia, deploying advanced technology and resources to scour vast areas of the southern Indian Ocean where the plane is believed to have crashed. However, despite these efforts, no conclusive evidence of the aircraft or its wreckage has been recovered. In 2018, the search was handed over to Ocean Infinity, a private exploration firm specializing in deep-sea surveys. This partnership continued through 2025, with Ocean Infinity conducting two separate search campaigns without success.

Under the renewed agreement, Ocean Infinity will continue its search within a designated area of approximately 7,428.54 square kilometers. The extension, which runs from July 1, 2026, to June 30, 2027, allows for the completion of this final phase of the search. The agreement retains the “no find, no fee” clause, ensuring that Ocean Infinity will only receive payment of $70 million upon locating the wreckage. This financial structure reflects both the complexity of the task and the high stakes involved for the families of the victims.

Transport Minister Anthony Loke emphasized that the decision to extend the search represents the government’s ongoing commitment to providing closure for the families of the passengers. He noted that the extension also accommodates new commercial commitments made by Ocean Infinity, which necessitate the temporary relocation of key search assets between November 2026 and April 2027. These adjustments are intended to ensure the safety and efficiency of the operation, particularly during the calmer sea seasons.

In addition to official statements, the families of the Chinese passengers have expressed concerns regarding transparency and communication. On the 12th anniversary of the flight’s disappearance, they released an open letter criticizing the lack of updates following the most recent search campaign. They acknowledged the challenges faced by the search teams but highlighted the absence of detailed briefings since early January 2026. While expressing gratitude for the government’s continued efforts, the families called for greater openness and accountability in the process.

The search for MH370 continues to hold significant emotional and logistical weight, not only for the families of the victims but also for the broader aviation community. As the search enters its twelfth year, the persistence of the operation underscores the enduring mystery surrounding the disappearance and the determination of those involved to uncover the truth. With Ocean Infinity set to resume its efforts under the new agreement, the hope remains that the search will finally yield results, bringing much-needed answers to those who have waited for over a decade.
