Madagascar tourist arrivals grow despite instability

Tourist arrivals in Madagascar increased by 5% in 2026 despite political instability caused by the removal of President Andriy Rajoelina. According to a tourism ministry official cited by French broadcaster RFI, the country recorded nearly 150,000 visitors in the first half of the year. Air France restarted flights to Madagascar last October after suspending operations during student-led protests that led to Rajoelina’s ousting, now operating six weekly flights to the capital, Antananarivo. Army Colonel Michael Randrianirina, who took control from Rajoelina, has pledged to restore civilian governance within two years.
