Macron promises more interceptor missiles to Kiev

French President Emmanuel Macron has announced that France will supply additional air defense missiles to Kyiv amid escalating Russian attacks, according to reports from Austrian public broadcaster ORF News. The decision comes after recent severe Russian strikes have intensified pressure on Ukrainian defenses, particularly in the realm of aerial protection. Macron called other nations to join in providing more weapons to Kyiv during a phone call with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on Saturday. A meeting of Ukraine’s international supporters is scheduled for Monday, where leaders including Macron, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, and British Prime Minister Andy Burnham will discuss further steps. The latest Russian attacks have caused significant casualties and damage. On Friday, a drone strike targeting a shopping center in Kryvyi Rih resulted in at least 16 deaths and over 100 injuries, according to Ukrainian authorities. Additional strikes on Saturday killed three people and injured 15 in the southeast of the country, while a daylight air raid alert was sounded in Kyiv. These incidents highlight the increasing intensity of hostilities, with both sides targeting civilian infrastructure such as logistics centers and oil refineries. Russian President Vladimir Putin warned Kyiv of harsh retaliation, accusing the country of opening “Pandora’s box” through attacks on Russia’s economy. In response to the rising threat, Zelenskyy has repeatedly urged the United States to sell Ukraine five percent of its existing Patriot missile systems, which would help the country survive the winter and save lives. France’s support aligns with this demand, as Macron emphasized the critical need for Ukraine to possess adequate means to defend its airspace against ballistic missiles.
