Macau will host the finals of the Women's Volleyball Nations League (VNL) for the first time, marking a significant milestone in the region’s sports calendar. This event represents a new chapter for the Chinese territory, which has previously hosted preliminary stages of the tournament on three occasions—2018, 2019, and 2024—but this year marks its debut as the venue for the final matches. The decision underscores Macau’s growing role in international sports and highlights efforts to diversify its economy beyond its traditional reliance on gambling.
The competition, organized under the auspices of the International Volleyball Federation (FIVB), brings together 18 national teams, including Brazil, which finished second in the 2025 edition. Brazil currently holds the second position after the first round of preliminary matches, having secured all their victories so far. The finals will feature the host nation, China, along with the seven best-ranked teams from the preliminary rounds, which took place between June 3 and July 12. The matches will be held in a knockout format, where a single loss results in elimination.
The event will take place at the Macau Dome, also known as the Nave Desportiva dos Jogos da Ásia Oriental, a state-of-the-art facility designed to accommodate large-scale sporting events. The finals are being co-organized by the Institute of Sports, the Galaxy Entertainment Group—a major casino operator in Macau—and the General Association of Volleyball of Macau-China. These partnerships reflect the collaborative approach taken to ensure the success of the event and to leverage the occasion for broader economic and social benefits.
During a press conference, Lei Si Leng, the acting president of the Institute of Sports, emphasized that Macau has developed a genuine passion for volleyball, citing the successful hosting of previous stages of the tournament. She noted that the region’s enthusiasm for the sport has grown significantly over the years, making it an ideal location for such a high-profile event. In a video message, Marcelo Hargreaves da Costa, director of product at Volleyball World and former Brazilian player, expressed pride and satisfaction about bringing the VNL finals to Macau, highlighting the significance of the event for both the sport and the region.
Philip Cheng Yee-sing, director of the Galaxy Entertainment Group, pledged to organize a series of parallel events aimed at strengthening the connection between volleyball and the local community. Organizers have stated that they hope the finals will contribute to promoting "sports tourism" and positioning Macau as a "Sports City." This aligns with the government’s strategic plan to diversify the city’s economy, which has long been heavily dependent on revenue from gambling and entertainment.
According to official data, casinos accounted for nearly half (47.3%) of Macau’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) in 2025. When combined with tourism, these sectors contributed 74.1% to the local economy. The government has identified sports, commerce, and conventions and exhibitions as four key areas to reduce dependency on the gaming industry. Hosting international sporting events like the VNL finals is seen as a crucial step toward achieving this goal, offering opportunities to attract visitors, enhance infrastructure, and promote cultural exchange.
The inclusion of Macau in the VNL finals also reflects the increasing global recognition of the region as a hub for international events. With its modern facilities, strategic location, and growing reputation in the sports world, Macau is well-positioned to become a prominent destination for future competitions. The event is expected to draw attention not only from volleyball enthusiasts but also from investors and tourists interested in experiencing the unique blend of culture, hospitality, and sporting excellence that the region offers.
