Government prepares legislative agenda for new term; Sheinbaum will define priorities, says Segob

The Mexican government has begun preparing its legislative agenda for the upcoming session period, with Secretary of Government Rosa Icela Rodríguez confirming that President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo’s administration is finalizing plans to present its priorities to Congress. The regular session of Congress will begin on September 1, and Rodríguez announced that she will participate in meetings with lawmakers from Morena, the Party of the Democratic Revolution (PT), and the Green Party in both chambers of Congress. These sessions aim to outline the executive branch's policy goals and address questions from legislators. Rodríguez confirmed her participation in a meeting with the Senate of the Republic on August 30 at 9:00 a.m., followed by a session with the Chamber of Deputies at 12:00 p.m. On the following day, she will attend a meeting with the PT. During these gatherings, she will explain the administration’s objectives and respond to inquiries from members of Congress. She emphasized that the government continues to engage with lawmakers to define mechanisms and dates for appearances and interventions in both chambers. She noted that while the legislative agenda is still under review with President Sheinbaum, it will be made public soon through the Legal Advisory Council led by Luisa Alcalde. The council will formally release the list of initiatives. Rodríguez also mentioned that previously submitted legislative proposals, which have already entered the legislative process, will continue their respective procedures in both houses. When asked about the possibility of presenting a preferred initiative, a procedural tool used in previous administrations, Rodríguez expressed gratitude for the legislature’s cooperation over the past two years. She highlighted that the government has received support from Congress to enact legal changes within the country. She praised the effort and dedication of legislators in advancing reforms and maintaining the integrity of Mexico’s legal framework. In addition to legislative preparations, the ruling party Morena issued a statement urging citizens to unite behind President Sheinbaum amid external pressures. The party criticized the opposition, particularly the National Action Party (PAN), for demanding investigations into former Energy Secretary Andy López Beltrán, based on alleged ties to drug trafficking networks. Morena accused the opposition of seeking to undermine the government’s legitimacy by leveraging foreign influence. The party argued that such actions are part of a broader strategy to regain power through external pressure rather than internal political change. It claimed that the opposition seeks to restore a corrupt system of privileges and business dealings, which the public has rejected in elections. Morena framed the pushback against foreign interference as essential to preserving the progress achieved during the Fourth Transformation. The statement called for solidarity with the president, emphasizing that supporting her is equivalent to defending the mandate granted by the people. It warned that allowing external forces to challenge domestic governance could jeopardize the stability and direction of the nation. This stance reflects the ongoing tensions between the ruling coalition and the opposition, especially as the legislative session approaches and key policy decisions are set to unfold.
