A study conducted in China suggests that limiting sugar intake during early life could reduce the risk of developing dementia later in adulthood. The research, published in Neurology, was carried out by scientists at the University of Science and Technology of Hong Kong. It compared individuals born during World War II, when sugar rationing was enforced in the United Kingdom, with those born after the war ended. The researchers analyzed data from 64,737 participants, dividing them into groups based on their exposure to sugar rationing. Participants were followed starting at an average age of 55 years for up to 15 years, using medical records to identify cases of dementia. Among those who had been exposed to rationing before birth and during their first year of life, 388 out of 15,025 developed dementia. For those exposed until the age of two, the number rose to 456 out of 15,256. In contrast, among the 23,774 individuals born after the rationing period, 504 were diagnosed with dementia. Overall, exposure to sugar rationing before birth and up to one year of age was associated with a 21% lower risk of dementia, increasing to 23% for those exposed up to two years of age. Additionally, the study found that individuals with lower sugar consumption during early childhood showed a delayed onset of dementia by an average of 2.6 years. Magnetic resonance imaging revealed that those with reduced sugar intake in early life had greater total gray matter volume and less brain tissue damage. Jiazhen Zheng, one of the authors of the study, stated, “Our results suggest that limiting sugar in the earliest stages of life might have long-lasting benefits for brain health.” He added, “The data highlight the importance of nutrition in early childhood in reducing the risk of dementia decades later.” The findings come amid growing global interest in how early-life factors influence long-term health outcomes. Researchers have increasingly focused on diet, environmental exposures, and other lifestyle elements as potential contributors to chronic diseases. This study adds to the body of evidence suggesting that dietary habits established in infancy can have lasting effects on cognitive function and disease risk.
