A leading physician has concluded that smoking traditional cigarettes poses the greatest health risk among three common nicotine consumption methods, cigarettes, vaping, and nicotine pouches, and the verdict is clear. Dr. Rayyan Zafar, a specialist in public health, conducted a detailed analysis of all three options and emphasized that while none are safe, cigarette smoking stands out as the most dangerous due to the nature of its harmful effects on the body. The market for these products remains vast, reflecting widespread demand across different demographics. All three contain nicotine, which is highly addictive and compels users to seek more. However, the health risks associated with each method differ significantly. Dr. Zafar explained that the primary issue lies not just in the presence of nicotine, but in how it is consumed. Cigarette smoke is inhaled directly into the lungs, and the combustion process produces thousands of toxic chemicals, many of which are carcinogenic. Over time, this can lead to severe internal damage, contributing to a range of cancers, including lung, throat, and mouth cancer, as well as serious cardiovascular diseases such as heart attacks and strokes. Dr. Zafar noted that there is no safe level of cigarette smoking, even occasional use. He warned that even a few instances of smoking can cause substantial cardiovascular harm. Long-term consequences of this habit are often fatal for many individuals. Despite the dangers, he acknowledged that vaping and nicotine pouches are not without their own health concerns. Research on e-cigarette users has shown that vaping can reduce the functionality of red blood cells, impairing oxygen circulation throughout the body. Scientists have also found that vapers suffer from inflammation of blood vessels. Concerns are growing over the increasing number of children and young adults being admitted to hospitals with illnesses linked to vaping, some of whom require intensive care due to excessive consumption. Regarding nicotine pouches, Dr. Zafar suggested they might be the least harmful of the three options, though still detrimental to health. These relatively new products remain under study, and long-term health impacts are yet to be fully understood. Initial findings indicate adverse effects such as gum irritation, oral sores, and white lesions where the pouches are placed. Although marketed as “smokeless” alternatives, independent studies have detected carcinogens such as formaldehyde and nickel in some brands. Ingestion of a pouch carries a risk of nicotine poisoning, making it essential to avoid swallowing them. Dr. Zafar expressed concern over the marketing strategies used for nicotine products, fearing that such tactics could encourage users to start with smaller doses, particularly among youth and non-smokers. His final recommendation was that transitioning from cigarettes to another nicotine product likely results in a significant reduction in health risks. However, the safest course of action remains avoiding all nicotine-based products altogether. Experts caution against the myth of safer nicotine, emphasizing that nicotine, regardless of delivery method, is toxic to the cardiovascular system, can elevate blood pressure, and damage blood vessels. For long-time smokers, switching to regulated alternatives may represent a step forward, but for younger individuals and non-smokers, these products present purely health-related risks.
