Life sentence for three in IUML councillor murder case in Kerala

Life sentences were handed down to three individuals convicted of murdering former Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) councillor Abdul Jaleel in a case that has drawn attention in Kerala. The Additional District and Sessions Court-III, Manjeri, delivered its verdict on Wednesday, sentencing Shuhaib alias Kochu, Abdul Majeed P.T., and Shamseer to life imprisonment for the crime. Each of the convicts was also fined ₹1 lakh. The judgment was pronounced by Additional District and Sessions Judge Sooraj S. The incident occurred on March 29, 2022, in Kuttippara, a locality near Manjeri. According to the prosecution, the three accused confronted Jaleel and his companions following a disagreement over the direction they were taking on their motorcycle. During the confrontation, Shuhaib and Abdul Majeed reportedly assaulted the victims, using a helmet to shatter the windshield of their car. They also made threatening remarks towards the group. Later that evening, while Jaleel inspected the damage to his vehicle, Shamseer allegedly relayed information about his whereabouts to the others. This led to Shuhaib attacking Jaleel with a granite stone, striking him on the head. Jaleel sustained severe injuries and succumbed to his wounds during medical treatment on March 30, 2022. Following the incident, local police inspector C. Alavi initiated an investigation and successfully apprehended the suspects. The case was later forwarded to Inspector Riyas Chakkeeri, who prepared the formal chargesheet. The prosecution presented evidence from 45 witnesses, along with 98 documents and 12 physical items, to support its case. Special public prosecutor K.V. Sabu represented the state during the trial. The conviction followed a thorough judicial review of the evidence and testimonies. The court's order specified that if the fines are settled, ₹3 lakh would be distributed to Jaleel’s legal heirs, and ₹25,000 would go to Abbas, a key witness in the case.
