Researchers from Aarhus University and Moesgaard Museum in Denmark have developed a low-cost multispectral imaging system called LEDMSI that uses LEDs at 16 different wavelengths to analyze soil layers during archaeological excavations. This technology helps distinguish between visually similar soil deposits by capturing data across the electromagnetic spectrum, which traditional white light photography cannot achieve. The system was tested at the Sorte Muld site on Bornholm, where it revealed subtle differences between soil layers that were previously indistinguishable. By analyzing spectral data with statistical methods, the team aims to improve accuracy and efficiency in archaeological fieldwork.
