Food safety How dangerous is it to lick aluminium yogurt lids?

A resident of Aargau contacted the Swiss radio program 'Espresso' to ask whether it is harmful to lick an aluminum yogurt lid. Major retailers and yogurt producers such as Migros, Coop, Emmi, and Nestlé subsidiary Hirz responded that their yogurt lids are coated with a plastic layer, preventing direct contact between the tongue and aluminum. According to toxicologist Michael Arand, there is practically no health risk associated with licking an aluminum lid, as only a tiny fraction of any ingested aluminum would be absorbed by the body. He explained that aluminum quickly forms an oxidation layer which limits its release into food or beverages. This applies to other aluminum items like espresso machines and grilling trays, though acidic marinades could slightly increase aluminum leaching. However, the amounts involved remain harmless according to experts. The Federal Office of Food Safety and Veterinary Affairs (BLV) emphasized that some aluminum grilling trays may not be suitable for highly acidic foods but noted that products should generally be safe when used as instructed.
