Torrential rains cause flooding in low and streets in Torredembarra and El Vendrell

Heavy rainfall has triggered flooding in Torredembarra and El Vendrell, leaving one person with critical injuries, according to local reports. Authorities evacuated approximately 300 people from a campsite in Roda de Berà and around 150 young people from a nightclub in El Vendrell. The emergency medical service, known as SEM, responded to three cases involving a family in Roda de Berà after part of a wall collapsed. One member of the family suffered critical injuries and was transported to the Tarragona hospital. The heavy downpours caused widespread disruption, with roads becoming impassable and power outages reported in some areas. Local authorities have been working to clear waterways and restore essential services. In Torredembarra, residents described the situation as chaotic, with many homes experiencing water ingress and some structures damaged. A local official stated that the municipality had activated its contingency plans and coordinated with regional agencies to manage the crisis. In El Vendrell, the evacuation of the nightclub was prompted by rising floodwaters that threatened the building’s stability. Emergency personnel used boats to assist those stranded in their cars and ensured safe passage for evacuees. The affected area includes both urban and rural zones, with particular concern over the safety of low-lying properties and infrastructure. Some residents expressed frustration over the lack of prior warning, though officials noted that the intensity of the rainfall exceeded typical seasonal patterns. Protección Civil, the civil protection agency, confirmed that the incident represents one of the most severe weather-related emergencies in the region this year. They emphasized the importance of community preparedness and urged continued vigilance as the rain continues. Meanwhile, environmental experts warned that such extreme weather events could become more frequent due to climate change, highlighting the need for improved drainage systems and flood defenses.
