Largest ever sex abuse compensation case against Poland’s Catholic church begins

A court in Poland has started hearing the largest-ever compensation claim against the Catholic Church by a victim of clerical sexual abuse. Janusz Szymik alleges he was repeatedly raped by a priest, Jan W., between 1984 and 1989 while he was a minor. The abuse occurred in the village of Międzybrodzie Bialskie, which was then part of the Archdiocese of Kraków but later transferred to the Diocese of Bielsko-Żywiec. As an adult, Szymik reported the abuse to Bishop Tadeusz Rakoczy twice, in 1993 and 2007, but no action was taken until after Rakoczy retired in 2013. His successor, Bishop Roman Pindel, initiated canonical proceedings against Jan W., resulting in a five-year ban on priestly ministry and eventual removal from the priesthood in 2024. Szymik is seeking 20 million zloty in compensation from the diocese, including 1 million for the abuse itself and 2 million for the negligence of the bishops. The diocese requested the court to investigate Szymik's sexual orientation and whether he derived any benefit from the relationship, sparking controversy.
