Decade of Excellence in STEM Education: Iwerekun Community Senior High School wins 10th edition of Tolaram Science Challenge

Iwerekun Community Senior High School in Ibeju-Lekki, Lagos, has claimed victory in the 10th edition of the Tolaram Science Challenge (TSC). This marks the school's third consecutive win in the competition, solidifying its reputation as a leading institution in STEM education within the region. The final round took place recently, where Iwerekun Community Senior High School defeated Magbon-Alade Senior Grammar School in a tightly contested match. The competition brought together 16 secondary schools, each sending six students to participate in a rigorous series of tests across five core subject areas: Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Mathematics, and General Knowledge.

The Tolaram Science Challenge, organized annually by Lagos Free Zone, serves as a major platform for nurturing young talent in the Ibeju-Lekki axis of Lagos. Designed to encourage innovation and problem-solving skills, the competition allows students to present creative solutions to real-life issues using principles of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics. Over the course of the competition, students demonstrated their abilities in multiple disciplines, showcasing both individual brilliance and teamwork. In addition to the overall winners, three standout students—Nyong Jebson, Adekunle Ephraim, and Ashikodi Chukwu—were recognized for their exceptional performances, receiving cash prizes for their achievements.

The event was marked by significant growth since its inception in 2016. What began as a modest initiative has evolved into one of Lagos Free Zone’s most prominent Corporate Social Responsibility programs. According to Binay Saraf, Director of Zone Development representing Adesuwa Ladoja, CEO of Lagos Free Zone, the TSC has expanded in terms of reach, engagement, and influence over the past decade. Each year, the number of participating schools, students, and teachers has increased, reflecting a growing interest in STEM fields among the youth. Saraf emphasized that the competition now stands as a vital tool for fostering curiosity, creativity, and critical thinking among participants.

Ladoja highlighted the broader vision behind the TSC, stating that the initiative aligns with Lagos Free Zone’s long-term goals of community development. She explained that while infrastructure and job creation are important aspects of community progress, equally crucial is providing young people with educational opportunities that allow them to explore their potential. By encouraging students to view competitions not merely as contests for trophies but as platforms for personal and academic growth, the organizers aim to instill values such as resilience, collaboration, and self-discovery.

Vishal Shah, Director and Chief Sustainability Officer at Lagos Free Zone, reiterated the organization’s commitment to enhancing the quality of education in the Ibeju-Lekki area. He pointed out that the TSC has contributed significantly to raising academic standards and promoting a culture of healthy competition among students. Over the past ten years, the program has played a role in improving results in various qualifying exams, indicating a positive impact on student performance and engagement with STEM subjects.

Olakunle Fadumiye, the Visioner of the Tolaram Science Challenge, spoke about the deeper purpose of the competition. He expressed hope that all participants would carry forward the lessons learned and become advocates for excellence in their respective schools, regardless of whether they won or lost. Fadumiye acknowledged that when the TSC began in 2016, many students lacked motivation to pursue science-related studies due to limited perceived opportunities. However, he believes that initiatives like the TSC are helping to change that narrative by demonstrating the value of education and the possibilities it offers.

As the competition enters its eleventh year, expectations are high for continued success and expansion. Organizers anticipate further growth in participation and engagement, aiming to inspire even more students to embrace STEM disciplines. With the support of Lagos Free Zone and other stakeholders, the Tolaram Science Challenge is poised to maintain its legacy as a catalyst for educational advancement and youth empowerment in the region.
