Lagos Govt arrests hoodlums harassing, extorting motorists on Lekki-Ajah Expressway

Lagos State authorities have arrested several suspects during a midnight operation targeting criminals harassing and extorting motorists along the Lekki, Ajah Expressway. The operation, led by the Lagos State Rapid Response Squad (RRS), was announced by Lagos State Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, through his social media account on Sunday. According to Wahab, the operation focused on individuals alleged to be engaging in intimidation, extortion, and vehicle vandalism against drivers who refused to comply with their demands. The Lekki, Ajah corridor has long been plagued by reports of such incidents, with motorists frequently subjected to harassment by suspected touts. These acts reportedly include verbal abuse, demands for bribes, and, in extreme cases, physical threats or property damage. Security agencies have previously launched enforcement actions in response to these complaints, but the recent operation appears to be one of the most intensive yet. The RRS, known for its swift and decisive interventions, deployed forces under cover of darkness to apprehend the offenders. Wahab stated that the operation was intelligence-driven, indicating that the RRS had gathered information on specific individuals and groups engaged in these unlawful activities. He emphasized that the move was part of a broader strategy to safeguard public safety and ensure the smooth flow of traffic across the state. “The RRS will continue to sustain intelligence-led operations and enforcement actions against criminal elements whose activities threaten public safety and disrupt the free movement of people and vehicles across the State,” he said. In addition to addressing immediate concerns, the commissioner highlighted the role of public behavior in perpetuating the problem. He referenced a documentary shared on social media that depicted hoodlums allegedly harassing celebrities and demanding money. In response, Wahab expressed concern over the influence of certain public figures and ordinary citizens who might unintentionally support such activities. “The continued financial support and patronage they receive from some influencers, celebrities, and members of the public... inadvertently encourage them to return to the streets,” he noted. Wahab called for greater community vigilance, urging residents to refrain from actions that might contribute to the persistence of street begging and lawlessness. “We therefore urge everyone to desist from activities that may inadvertently encourage lawlessness, insecurity, street begging, and environmental nuisance on our roads,” he added. He underscored the importance of collaboration between the government and the public in maintaining order and safety. The Lekki, Ajah Expressway, which connects key areas of Lagos, has become a focal point for such crimes due to its high volume of traffic and the presence of numerous commercial and residential zones. Law enforcement officials have previously cited the area as a hotspot for illegal activities, including petty theft, fraud, and aggressive solicitation. The latest operation marks another step in the ongoing efforts to restore confidence among commuters and reduce the prevalence of such offenses. Authorities have indicated that further operations are likely, especially as they aim to dismantle networks responsible for sustaining the cycle of crime. The success of the current raid may lead to increased pressure on local communities to take proactive measures in preventing similar incidents.
