A religious festival organized by Rome's Islamic community was held without proper documentation, according to recent findings revealed through public records requests. The event, known as Eid al-Adha, took place on May 31 at Villa Gordiani, but organizers were reportedly unable to serve food or drinks due to missing paperwork. This information emerged after a request for access to documents made by Federico Rocca, a member of the Assembly of Rome’s Capitol and part of the Brothers of Italy party, along with Fabio Piattoni, a councilor from the Fifth Municipal District of Rome where the event occurred. Rocca and Piattoni criticized the Fifth Municipal District and Rome City Council for failing to conduct necessary checks regarding the permits required for hosting the festival. They emphasized that their goal was not to find irregularities after the event had concluded, but rather to ensure compliance with regulations before the event began. Their concerns focused particularly on the lack of a required notice of commencement (SCIA) for serving food and beverages during the celebration. The two officials noted that the document they had most strongly requested—pertaining to the SCIA—was later contested by the local police together with discrepancies concerning the stage setup and placement of gazebos. According to them, these checks should have been conducted prior to the start of the event, not after it had ended. They argued that this situation would likely not be allowed in other public events. Additionally, the Office of Permissions for Villas and Parks confirmed that no application for vehicle access within the archaeological park of Villa Gordiani had been received. This raised questions about who authorized the entry of vehicles and whether any violations were addressed or if this aspect remained uninvestigated. There was also a query regarding the fee for occupying public space, which amounted to just 72 euros. While acknowledging the calculation method outlined in the documents, Rocca and Piattoni expressed the need to understand whether such a determination was indeed appropriate. They clarified that their criticism was not directed against the Islamic community or its cultural traditions. However, they stressed that the right to practice one's faith must always be guaranteed. Nevertheless, true integration, they argued, requires adherence to the same rules applicable to everyone, without exceptions or the risk of perceived favoritism. Brothers of Italy has called upon Mayor of the Fifth Municipal District, Mauro Caliste, and Rome's mayor, Roberto Gualtieri, to publicly explain what checks were carried out beforehand and what measures they intend to take to prevent similar incidents from occurring again. Rocca and Piattoni firmly believe that legality cannot be intermittent. Rules apply to everyone or to no one. The incident highlights the ongoing debate over how to balance religious practices with regulatory requirements in public spaces.
