An aged letter written by Alpine soldier Matteo Gallesio, dated January 10, 1943, has finally reached his niece Gisella 83 years after he died during World War II in Russia. The letter was discovered in the archives of the Nuto Revelli Foundation in Cuneo, which preserves documents related to Italy’s war efforts, including letters from soldiers on the front lines. Gallesio, born in Fossano, served on multiple fronts, including Western Europe, Greece-Albania, and Italy-Yugoslavia, before being sent to Russia in August 1942 with the Cuneense Alpine Division. His family had never received the letter until recently, thanks to the efforts of volunteers from the Red Cross’s Restoring Family Links service and the foundation.
