Protests over the arrival in Venice of Tilman Fertitta, Cgil: 'It is a shame to welcome the mega yacht of the US ambassador'

The U.S. ambassador, Tilman J. Fertitta, arrived in Venice aboard his luxury megayacht Boardwalk on July 17 at noon, marking another stop on the “Freedom 250 Coastal Diplomacy Tour.” The 117-meter vessel, valued at approximately $450 million, docked in the Venetian lagoon ahead of the traditional Festival of the Redeemer. The arrival has sparked controversy, with tensions emerging in the Italian Parliament over security measures required for the diplomatic cruise. The tour, which began in Naples on June 24 and is scheduled to conclude in Sardinia by mid-August, includes stops in 13 regions across Italy. The itinerary features official meetings, business engagements, and military exchanges aimed at strengthening ties between Italy and the United States. Following a previous stop in Cefalù, chosen to honor the Sicilian roots of Fertitta’s family and his friendship with former President Donald Trump, the Boardwalk made its way to Venice, where a protest was planned for 6 p.m. Fertitta, who has faced criticism in recent weeks following controversial remarks by Trump regarding Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, has spent much of his tenure abroad on the megayacht. The vessel boasts two helipads, swimming pools, a spa, a gym, and even a small golf course, alongside spaces designed for hospitality and formal gatherings. This choice contrasts with the historic Villa Taverna in Rome, traditionally used as the U.S. embassy residence. In response to an urgent parliamentary inquiry led by Avs group leader Luana Zanella, the government’s deputy minister for Enterprises and Made in Italy, Valentino Valentini, defended the security arrangements. Zanella accused the state of using public resources to fund what she called a “tourist cruise at the expense of the Italian taxpayer,” noting that Venice is not Las Vegas. She criticized the deployment of naval units, coast guard vessels, police helicopters, and local authorities enforcing restrictions around the yacht. Valentini countered by citing the 1961 Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations, specifically Article 29, which guarantees the inviolability of diplomats. He emphasized that Italy, as the host country, is obligated under international law to take all necessary precautions to protect the ambassador’s safety, freedom, and dignity. These measures include an exceptional individual protection protocol already standard for ambassadors. During the debate, references were made to protests held earlier this month in Venice, where activists displayed a banner measuring 117 meters, exactly the length of the Boardwalk, to oppose Fertitta’s visit. The demonstrations highlighted broader concerns over the ambassador’s close ties to Trump and perceived disrespect toward Italian political figures. Some protesters argued that the security measures imposed on the yacht represent an overreach of state power, while others viewed them as a necessary precaution given the high-profile nature of the visit. As the tour continues, the focus will remain on balancing diplomatic engagement with public accountability. The government faces mounting pressure to justify the costs associated with securing the Boardwalk, particularly amid ongoing debates over transparency and resource allocation.
